Dear Resident of the Chathams:
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), which regulates all New Jersey public utilities, has several New Jersey Clean Energy (NJCEP) programs that can help you increase your energy efficiency and save money.  This letter will introduce you to these programs, tell you where to find more information about them, and also provide you some information about energy deregulation in New Jersey.   By telling you about these programs, our goal is to raise your awareness of options you have about which you may not be aware.  By no means are we endorsing any energy product or company.

Energy deregulation allows customers to choose where they buy their power.  Under deregulation, your energy service is broken down into two parts, generation and delivery.  The utility companies (JCP&L and PSE&G in our area) always deliver energy to your home or business, but you have a choice of suppliers to provide the energy you use. Green energy comes from clean and renewable sources, such as solar, wind, and small hydro power.  Choosing a green energy supplier lowers carbon emissions by increasing the amount of renewable energy in the grid.

All customers of PSE&G and JCP&L First Energy are eligible to participate in the New Jersey Clean Energy (NJCEP) programs described below.  Further information about all of these programs is available on the NJCEP website, www.njcleanenergy.com.  These programs can change at any time.  Please check the NJCEP website, and/or call 866-NJSMART, before applying for any of these programs.

Clean Power Choice: Customers can sign up online to obtain their energy from clean and renewable sources, such as solar, wind, or small hydro power, that are generated in New Jersey and the mid-Atlantic.  There is nothing to install.  This program includes three companies; they are not the only clean energy companies that serve New Jersey.   Some people prefer to sign up with a green energy company by contacting that company directly, instead of going through Clean Power Choice.  One place to find information about green energy suppliers that serve our area is Green-E, www.green-e.org, an independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the retail market.  Energy is delivered to your home or business by the public utility companies but supplied by a renewable energy company.

NJCEP Online Lighting Store: This store offers significantly discounted CFL and LED light bulbs, as well as a variety of discounted interior, exterior and plug-in fixtures, from outdoor lights to floor and table lamps, to wall and ceiling fixtures.  Save money on the bulbs and fixtures and also on the energy cost of using them.  Shipping is free on orders of $25 or more. www.NJCleanEnergy.com/shopnow. The Lighting Store was at the Green Fair of the Chathams on September 24, 2011.

Home Energy Analysis: An online tool to help understand energy use and take steps to save energy and money and is linked to NJCEP incentives and ENERGY STAR rebates.  Recommendations are customized to the age of the home and existing appliances.  PSE&G customers use http://c01.apogee.net/clients/default.aspx?utilityid=pseg and JCP&L customers use http://www.firstenergycorp.com/content/customer/save_energy/home_energy_analyzer.html

Home Performance with Energy Star : Select one of the certified contractors to conduct a home energy audit.  After the assessment, you will receive a report listing recommended energy efficiency measures and identifying available financial incentives.  Enhanced Incentives beginning 1/01/12 – incentives up to $5,000 available, plus an opportunity for 0% financing for any projects achieving total energy savings from 10% to over 25%.  This program is also available for oil, propane, and municipal electric customers through June 30, 2012, or until funds are exhausted.

$50 Clothes Washer Rebate: Rebate for EPA ENERGY STAR clothes washers with Modified Energy Factor of 2.2 or higher purchased in 2011 and installed in NJ. Model must be listed on NJCleanEnergy.com/clothes washers.  Proof of purchase, manufacturer, ENERGY STAR model number, serial number, store name and location, purchase date and price must be submitted on the application.

WARM Advantage:  Domestic Hot Water Heaters purchased after 2/15/11 with an Energy Factor of 82 or higher are eligible for a $300 rebate.  An electric solar domestic water heater, with eligible equipment list and electric backup, is eligible for a $1,200 rebate.  Call 866-NJSMART.  Furnaces, ENERGY STAR qualified, AFUE 92% or higher, qualify for a $300 incentive; with electronic commulated motor, a $400 incentive.  Boilers with AFUE 85% or higher, ENERGY STAR Qualified; a $300 rebate. Application forms are available at www.NJCleanEnergy.com. This program is also available for oil, propane, and municipal electric customers through June 30, 2012, or until funds are exhausted.

COOL Advantage: Offering $500 incentives for central air conditioning or ductless mini-split air conditioning system with compressor and coil combination that yields SEER 16 and EER 13.  Also $500 incentive for air to heat pump or ductless mini-split heat pump, compressor and coil combination that yields SEER 16, EER 13 and HSPF 8.5.  This program is also available for oil, propane, and municipal electric customers through June 30, 2012, or until funds are exhausted.

SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Certificates) Registration Program: Before proceeding with any solar project on your home, register the project to establish eligibility to receive SRECs.  After construction and completed paperwork, the project receives a Certification Number to earn SRECs.  Every time the system generates 1,000 KWh of electricity – houses can generate this much electricity – an SREC is placed in the customer’s electronic account.  SRECs can be sold on the SREC tracking systems, generating revenue for 15 years.  SREC prices fluctuate based on supply and demand.  Most SREC purchasers are electricity suppliers, which pay a Solar Alternative Compliance payment if they don’t meet the NJ Solar Renewable Portfolio Standard, which they can meet by purchasing SRECs.

Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling Program: Free pick-up and a $50 rebate for your old, operational refrigerator/freezer between 10 cubic feet and 30 cubic feet In size.  Call 877-270-3520. Newer refrigerators use on average 1,000 kWh less annually than models manufactured before 1990 and can save $150 in annual energy costs.  Incentives processed within 90-120 days.  Program valid through 12/31/11; no decision has been made to extend the program to 2012.

Several NJCEP business programs are also available.  The attached brochure describes those programs.

Information about deregulation, and about the NJCEP programs, will be available at the Eco Film and Discussion Series film, Houston, We Have A Problem!, which will be shown on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 7:30 pm, free of charge, at the Library of the Chathams.  A local representative from an energy company will be on hand.  Free light refreshments will be available.

Regards,
