New this year to the Chatham Township Environmental Commission's annual
Riverside Cleanup, held this year on Saturday, April 17, was an
educational pamphlet identifying the plants along the riverside path.
Now besides picking up trash and clipping multiflora rose participants
used the checklist to identify some of the wildflowers and trees they
saw on the three-quarter mile long path along the bank of the Passaic
River in Chatham Township. The more than 80 participants included
families, residents, members of Girl Scout Troops 1240, 399, 1579, 944,
Boy Scout Troop 1579, and Cub Scout Pack 24. The group collected 35
bags of trash, a discarded water heater, dozens of golf balls, and large
pieces of metal and plastic. The Commission is grateful to the Chatham
Disposal Company for prompt, friendly and free pick up of the trash the
group assembles along River Road every year. Also thanks to ShopRite of
Chatham for supplies and to the New Providence Department of Public
Works for making parking available.
