Got Batteries and Printer Cartridges?

Effective August 15, 2009 Chatham Township’s Recycling Program, sponsored by the Township Environmental Commission/Green Team, will be expanded to include household batteries and printer/toner cartridges.  These items can be recycled in the shed at the Township’s Tanglewood Lane Recycling Depot located at the foot of Tanglewood Lane off of Fairmount Avenue. The depot is open on Tuesdays from 8:30-11:30am and on Saturdays from 8:00am-12 noon. This new Township service is a free and convenient way for Chatham Township residents to keep such materials out of the waste stream and landfills and to comply with state and local recycling laws.

Household batteries contain heavy metals such as nickel, cadmium, mercury, lead, silver and lithium. Working with Toxco Inc's Big Green Box all household rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be recycled. Automotive batteries cannot be accepted and should be taken to you gas station for recycling.

Computer printer toner cartridges present another hazard. However cartridges can be safely reused and recycled. Cartridge World in New Providence, working with the Environmental Commission/Green Team is providing printer cartridge recycling containers at the shed at Tanglewood Lane Recycling Depot and at the Township Municipal Building at 58 Meyersville Road.

By recycling your batteries and toner cartridges you keep heavy metals and chemicals out of the landfills where they can pose a health, safety, and environmental threat.

For additional information about recycling of electronics, batteries, cartridges, and appliances go to the Chatham Township website, www.chathamtownship.org, and click on the Recycling link on the  right side of the page, or go to Township Services and click on the Environmental Commission. Information is also printed in the Chatham Township Recycling Annual Info Flyer which is mailed to all residents.
