Certificate
of Smoke Detector - Carbon Monoxide Alarm - Portable Fire Extinguisher
Compliance
In Chatham Township since
1991, all one and two family dwellings prior to sale, lease and
or rent, are required to undergo an inspection to ensure that
each has properly installed and working smoke detectors and
carbon monoxide detectors. This assurance is design to enhance
the overall occupant and fire safety of all structures that have
been constructed prior to any code requirement to that affect,
and maintain those that have been constructed after 1977 (the
passage of the Uniform Construction Code-NJ). As of November 1,
2005 the requirement to have a portable 2A:10BC fire
extinguisher no larger than 10 lbs. installed within 10” of
the kitchen area was added.
The owner or authorized agent of the owner shall apply for a
CSDCMAPFEC on a form provided by the Fire Prevention Bureau. Applications may be obtain at the front desk of the Municipal Building at 58 Meyersville Road.
The certificate is not transferable. If the change of occupancy does not occur within six (6) months, a new application shall be required.
All applications must be completed and a request for an
inspection must be made to the office of the Fire Prevention Bureau. You must apply at least TWO weeks before your closing date for your inspection.
There is a $35.00 application fee for each application.
Missed appointments and failed inspections are subjected to a
$25.00 re-inspection fee.
Please
note: You must apply at least TWO weeks before your closing date for your inspection.
The most significant problem that the
Bureau has encountered has been in late requests. Requests are
handled in the order in which they are received. Scheduled
appointments get first priority, followed by mail in
applications. In Chatham Township , local ordinance requires
that all residential properties be equipped with working smoke
detectors. This includes all residential units located in the
Briarwood- Coach Light, Sutton Woods, Vernon Grove and Heritage Greene sections of the Chatham Glen section of the Township.
