Pesticide Free Zone Signs
Chatham Township is proudly displaying “Pesticide Free Zone” ladybug signs at each of its six playgrounds. The signs are intended to assure parents that their children are safe on the playgrounds from harmful chemicals. The pesticide free zones are part of the Chatham Township Environmental Commission's pesticide awareness campaign. While the Township has never used pesticides near playgrounds, it is common practice for landscapers to spray weed killer in private mulched beds, even under swing sets. Some wood chips come pretreated with herbicides and insecticides.
If you decide to maintain your property without pesticides, you may want to display a “Pesticide Free Zone” sign to encourage your neighbors to do the same or at least spark some conversation. More information about these signs is available at www.watoxics.org or by calling 206-632-1545.
