2010 Compost Area Guidelines

You must have a 2010 permit to use the Tanglewood Lane Compost Area. Permits will be checked as you enter. One permit, per household, is available free to Chatham Township residents, after March 1st, upon proof of residency, at the following locations:

The Municipal Building         (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)    Monday-Friday
The Public Works Building    (7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)    Monday-Friday
The Compost Area                (8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)    When it is open.

The residential permit is usable for a car or pick-up truck. If you intend to use a truck, larger than a pick-up truck, that you might borrow or own, you must receive prior permission for the specific date you intend to use the compost facility. For permission call the Public Works Department at 973-377-5114 and be prepared to give a description of the vehicle, the license plate number, and the date you will be coming to the Compost Area. A residential permit is not usable by your landscaper.

All Landscapers must contact the Public Works Department for purchase of compost permits 973-377-5114. Compost open to landscapers April 3rd.

ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS                  NON-ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS

Grass Clippings
Leaves
Branches
Building Materials
Rocks and Stones
Bio-degradable bags
Railroad Ties
Concrete
Stumps
Firewood
Plastic Bags

Whatever you bring your organic material in you must take back with you after unloading.
Leaves and grass must be separated and loaded in the designated area. Branches must be separated from leaves and grass and placed in the brush pile. Branches must be no larger than 4 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length.  Please remember that the inclusion of non-acceptable materials, like rocks and concrete, leads to severe damage to expensive equipment used for the shredding of compost material.

Please bear with us as we continue to request that GRASS and LEAVES be separated. The N. J. D.E.P. now requires that 90% of all grass, received at our compost area, be removed within fourteen (14) days.

We suggest that to save time and money you cut the grass more often and leave it. Studies show that not having to stop and empty the lawnmower bag can save you up to 20-25 % of your time, and the grass clippings, left on the lawn, will recycle nutrients, such as nitrogen, back into the soil.

Remember, this year like last year, the Department of Public Works will deliver 2 - 2 ½ yards of compost or mulch to your driveway for a fee of $25.00. Come in early to the Department of  Public Works office, at 405 Southern Boulevard, to be put on the delivery schedule.

If you have any questions regarding this information or any other composting problems, please call the Department of Public Works at 973-377-5114. Hopefully, we will have the answers.
